EE2020 Overview

Serrafix’s EE2020 project, funded by the Boston-based Barr Foundation and launched in 2010, is an intensive multi-year project to help Massachusetts cities create energy efficiency programs that are financially self-sustaining. With buildings accounting for nearly 40% of U.S. carbon emissions, EE2020 is focused on making an impact by upgrading building efficiency in both the residential and commercial sectors (especially critical in New England, given its older building stock and harsh winters).

Serrafix’s principals, along with our strategic partners at the Peregrine Energy Group, are leveraging their decades of high-level government, utility and industry experience to aid cities in increasing the number of "green retrofits." We provide technical assistance to help cities improve and streamline their energy efficiency efforts. Unique characteristics of the EE2020 project include:

  • Building strategic city-utility partnerships: We help cities and utilities work together strategically to meet each community’s needs and harness unique energy saving opportunities (leased properties, gas conversion, etc.)
  • Commercial sector focus: While we also address residential buildings, our focus is on the commercial sector, which accounts for the majority of cities’ energy use.
  • Cutting-edge marketing strategy: We provide strategic counsel based on the latest techniques in social marketing and social influence theory, using local leadership and organizations to connect with building owners.
  • User-friendly process: We’ve developed pilot strategies to help meet businesspeople and homeowners where they are, providing "energy concierge" service to ensure that leads don’t fall through the cracks and initial interest translates into actual upgrades.

The EE2020 project, which works under the auspices of the Charles River Watershed Association as our fiscal agent, will lead to more energy-efficient buildings - and fewer carbon emissions - in our partner cities.
